So much water.

Viperfang had seen flash flooding in the gorge before but nothing quite like this. The rain was still pouring down in torrents, tossed about by the howling winds and stinging like the bites of a thousand small snakes. It was all the clan could do to scramble unsteadily up the sides of the gorge, slipping and stumbling on the slick rocks.

Beneath them the water rushed past, rising steadily by the second and frothing with fury at the paws of those still in reach of the spitting waves. Looking up he could see that most of the clan had made it free, hauling themselves over the edge with waterlogged fur into the headlong winds that ravaged the landscape. There was still a pawful of cats still struggling up the walls, laden down by their soaked fur and unsteady on the slippery rocks. He could see Kindlestar further down along the canyon wall, waiting for every cat to reach safety before her, and Dawncloud just ahead, making his way up after Sunstorm, who appeared to be having difficulty under his dense fur, now soaked through because of the rain and flood waters. Twopelt could just be seen through the sheets of rain, standing tall at the edge of the gorge, despite the winds that likely buffeted him, watching as every cat climbed to safety.

A yowl of alarm from behind him brought his focus back and he snapped his head around to see the she-cat Beetleflight, who had been behind him, lose her footing on a particularly slick rock and go tumbling into the water below. In a flash he descended the bound down the rocks and right as she was about to vanish under and be swept off he managed to grasp hold of her scruff, feeling himself lurch as he caught her weight and braced against the current of the churning water. Her head came sputtering up out of the water and he could hear her gasping, but it was her alarmed struggles that had most of his attention.

“Hold still!” he growled as best as he could and she must have heard him because she calmed down and allowed herself to be hauled, completely soaked, back up onto the rocks and free of the greedy flood. She remained crouched there, shivering and wide-eyed for a moment until Viperfang figured that she wouldn’t be moving on her own anytime soon, “Alright, come on, up the rocks unless you want to take another swim,” he growled, giving her a nudge in the direction of Dawncloud, who was waiting just a few leaps above them. He must have turned around at the sound of Beetleflight’s yowl and waited to see if he could be of any help. That comment seemed to wake her up because her eyes got a sliver wider and she turned hastily to resume her scramble back up the rocks with the lanky tom right behind her.
