The wiry tom could hardly refrain a growl as his leader gave her final word on the matter. No matter how many times he complained to her- demanded that he be put on a patrol- she denied him and ordered him back to guard duty. Guard duty! It was insulting! And not to mention completely degrading. Left to guard the camp with a handful of she-cats, the incapacitated sickly and a nursery full of kits.

It made his paws prickle with the desire to move. He needed to be active, not pacing around inside the camp. With a suppressed hiss he turned and paced impatiently back toward Kindlestar, but one sharp look from her stopped him before he could reach her. Instead he veered to her right, stalking stiffly past so that she'd at least have a constant reminder of how aggravated he was, then bounded up onto a small rock outcrop. He had a perfect view of the whole camp from this vantage point, and flicking a clump of cold snow from one of his paws he crouched on the ledge.

He wasn't there long, but the cold seeping up through the rock chilled him, making time seem to seep slowly by. His ears swiveled sharply forward when he heard a rustle at the camp's entrance. The patrol emerge slowly into the clearing, their heads and tails drooping low and eyes filled with sorrow. He stared at the sight for a moment then glanced down at where his leader seemed to be lost in thought only a few strides from the rock he was on; she hadn't seen the patrol come into camp yet.

"Kindlestar..."
