Annie and Nick climbed into the pickup, and they started down the long driveway.
Annie wanted to buy a new young horse to begin training for racing since so far all their horses were at the usual age for retirement, but they were still going strong so Annie and Nick had decided to keep them racing.
But now Annie felt that a new face with more youth would be a warm welcome to the stables.

She and Nick had decided to go and visit Cedarwood Stables to see the new yearlings up for auction. She hoped that Nick’s good judgment would find them a good new yearling today at this auction.

When they arrived they stood examining the group of yearlings, Nick’s scrutinizing eye running over each of them carefully.
“Any of them catch your eye yet?” Annie asked.
Nick remained silent, not saying anything. He was the silent, brooding type when it came to training horses, and today was no exception.

He just stood there, watching each yearling with keen eyes half shaded by the brim of his hat. Wrinkles were accumulated around his gradually aging, squinted eyes.
She waited for an answer, but he still gave none. With a sigh she leaned back and looked at them all herself. At the moment she was interested in a filly, and there were to fillies up for auction—the dark bay, and the chestnut.

She watched the chestnut first, admiring its clean, unmarred coat. Then she turned her eyes to the dark bay filly that appeared to be nipping playfully at a black colt, who was clearly not pleased at the irritation pestering him.

She smirked with amusement, and was about to turn to Nick and hint toward the dark bay filly when he spoke up first.
“I’d like to see them up closer,” he said gruffly, and Annie found herself standing beside him as he calmly approached, to Annie’s surprise, the dark bay filly.
At first the horse shied away from his initial approach, then he pulled a carrot out of his pocket and her attitude changed.
Ears pricked forward and her eyes lit up as she turned round and took a few curious steps forward. Her neck stretched forward and upper lip twitched. Nick eased backward as she stepped forward, trying to coax her into following.
At first she didn’t move as he backed away, but tossed her head lightly, reaching forward further at the offered carrot.
Nick kept it just out of reach of the unmoving filly, waiting for just one step forward. She craned her neck even further, twisting her head sideways as if the motion would help draw the carrot to her mouth. The action brought a twitched smile to Nick’s usual stern face.
Slowly she shifted her weight forward, wanting that carrot so badly, her upper lip just inches away and clapping repeatedly on empty air, then she shuffled one hoof forward and her lip brushed over the tip of the carrot, claiming victory over the man who had tried to withhold it from her. A simple toss of her head was all she felt she needed to gloat the victory to him as the carrot vanished into her mouth.

“She’ll do,” Nick said. And it was all he needed to say for the decision to be made for Annie. He was, by far, more experienced than she, and had been training horses longer than she’d even been riding. He knew is horses, and she had always trusted his judgment.

“All right then, I’ll put the bid on her,” Annie smiled.
